Ground Mutations – Shoe Prints (1969) is a conceptual Land Art work by American artist Dennis Oppenheim that captures the artist’s extended interaction with industrial landscapes and human movement.

In preparation for the work, Oppenheim wore modified shoes with quarter‑inch diagonal grooves cut into the soles and heels for three winter months as he moved between Kearney, New Jersey and New York City. As he walked through snowy, swampy, and industrial terrain, the grooved soles left distinctive imprints in the ground—marks that visually connected the countless individual steps of many people into new, larger patterns. These impressions were photographed and presented as part of the final work, emphasizing the interplay between human action, landscape, and trace as artistic media. The inclusion of text alongside black‑and‑white and color photographs transforms the traces of footprints into an artwork that documents movement as both process and image, reflecting Oppenheim’s interest in how ordinary bodily actions inscribe meaning onto the earth.
