I Walk from the South to the North is a durational, participatory performance by Amanda Heng in which she spent two months walking daily across Singapore without prior knowledge of the routes. Relying entirely on chance encounters, she asked strangers for directions, recording their responses through drawn or written maps. The project captures both the generosity and surprise of city dwellers, who often suggested faster alternatives via public transit, while highlighting the slowing of urban life, the decline of walking, and the incidental interactions that shape the experience of the city. The resulting maps and directions form part of the work’s documentation, creating a portrait of Singapore through the perspectives of its inhabitants.
