iAmbic Pedometer is a durational iPhone video documenting Brennan’s walk from his home in Sunderland through inner-city, suburban, and semi-rural spaces. Conceived with a specific exhibition context in mind, the work features Brennan’s semi-coherent vocalisations emerging from ambient traffic noise, shifting between fragmented announcement and concrete poem.

The piece draws on accounts of Wordsworth’s compositional method, in which he would walk for hours uttering lines aloud. Brennan fuses this with Kurt Schwitters’ “ur-poetry,” aligning Wordsworth’s practice with a shamanic mode of utterance—where altered states open the voice to multiple registers of meaning.

The notion of the ur as an origin point is central: the work seeks to distil foundational sonic elements of language and connect them to the meters of walking and poetry. In doing so, Brennan extends 25 years of methodological exploration into the guided walk form – what he calls “the manoeuvre” – while situating it within a contemporary technological frame.
