LISTEN is a pioneering soundwalk by Max Neuhaus, inviting participants to explore the urban environment of 14th Street and Avenue C in Manhattan through attentive listening. Rather than presenting music in a conventional sense, Neuhaus transforms the city’s ambient sounds into an artistic experience, heightening awareness of sonic spaces often overlooked. Participants are guided to perceive the interplay of traffic, industrial hums, and subtle environmental noises, emphasizing sound as a dynamic, spatial, and socially situated medium. Listen marks an early and influential exploration of sound as autonomous art, foregrounding the act of listening as a creative, immersive practice.
