This mark-making device traces a walked line on a scale of 1:1

Equipped with our low-tech marking device – a walking stick tipped with chalk – we trace our trajectories in real time. Playing on cartographic conventions, this representation of walked lines inscribed on the ground at a 1:1 scale gently describes our navigation of the world.

These mark-making walks are made furtively in public spaces by the two artists, mostly outdoors but not exclusively. We have made participatory iterations of this work with groups of all ages.

Our intention is to provoke an attentiveness to individual contributions to our communities, and to enhance body-time-place awareness. We hope that those who encounter these inscriptions on the ground will find themselves in a direct relationship with the anonymous other, or more aware of the invisible cumulative walked lines of others. Ideally, they’ll follow the line to see where it goes.

In installation, the used chalk are presented as evidence of the walks.

GPS drawing

Drawing practices using GPS devices. Previously a planned route is studied. Although the drawing is done in the physical space, the creation must be seen through the applications that show those records. Also called GPS Art.
