Theatre Walks

Theatre doors are no longer sealed nowadays and performance often ventures outside. It embraces walking as a “theatrical scenario” and goes in quest of new, mobile, non-material or outdoor spatialities to replace or amplify the conventional stage. Site-specific and site-generic theatre events, walking performances, audio-guided drama, mobile theatre(s) and performance interventions, all flesh a theatre

The Idle walk of the Year

For the Idle Walk of the Year, the Berserk group carried objects from the Ethnological Museum to Amalienborg Square as slowly as possible, while Eric polished the Palace square with petroleum, continuing the museum’s long-standing floor-care tradition.

OMWEGEN / DETOURS is a guided performance walk by Ienke Kastelein and Sarah Kaushik. Participants follow themed routes that sharpen the senses and explore shifting boundaries between body, nature, and perception.

OMWEGEN (NL)

A drift with an audience that simultaneously becomes a performer.
Boundaries blur, while senses are heightened as you join Ienke and Sarah on one of the detours. They take participants on a detour through the stark contrasts of Ruigoord and its surroundings, offering both slowing down and intense experiences.

DETOUR 1: ENCLOSURES
fire, earth

We gather on the grounds of the former school to root ourselves in the layered rhythms of Ruigoord. With the linden tree, whispering ley lines, passing planes above, and the remains of a wall, we begin with gestures that ground us and awaken our inner perception.

This walk invites you to explore the landscape in resonance with your own inner world —boundaries, thresholds, and fences—by listening with your body. We move outward through the textures of the island while remaining in dialogue with what moves within. Expect invitations to slow down, position yourself between earth, fire and air, and explore space through simple gestures and presence.

Here, the boundary between observer and participant blurs. The senses become sharper. The walk becomes a conversation—with the land, memory, and energy.

DETOUR 2: WATERWAYS
water, light

We begin on the grounds of the former school, first walking south and then along the dike—the stinging periphery—on the fringe of the water, back to the heart of the island.

During this (longer) walk, we attune ourselves to the sounds of the landscape: the whisper of the reeds, the hum of the boats, the silence of the marsh, the calls of the wind and the birds, in tune with our own gestures and sounds. We follow subtle shifts—from sea to ditch, sound to silence, from outside to inside and vice versa.
We return not only to the temple, but also to our inner stream. Along the way, Ienke and Sarah invite you to become actively engaged with the environment: to see from the perspective of the bench, to hear through the body of the reed, to find meaning in gestures and silence. This is a return as becoming—of reunion and remembrance.
