On Thursday, September 13th High Line Art presented One Mile Parkour Film, a day-long performance by Los Angeles-based artist Jennifer West, in which the artist and High Line staff adhered a one-mile-long filmstrip to the entire length of the High Line for one day. Visitors were invited to walk on, touch, draw, dance, and alter the filmstrip, which consisted of images filmed by West in June of locations on and around the High Line. The day began early with the artist and High Line Art staff and volunteers taping the filmstrip to the pathway of the park. In the morning, elementary school children from Public School 3 in the West Village performed a dance on the filmstrip in the Diller – von Furstenberg Sundeck & Water Feature. In the afternoon, visitors could sit down at the Art Station, located in the 14th Street Passage, and use materials such as crayons, ink pads, and sharpies, to alter sections of the filmstrip. Later in the evening, three Parkour performers – known for their ability to do flips, jumps, and handstands spontaneously in urban environments and rooftops – performed on the High Line under The Standard, New York. Two of the Parkour performers were filmed by West in June in the rail yards section of the High Line and the resulting images were featured in the filmstrip along the park. At the end of the day, the filmstrip was rolled up and will go back to the artist’s Los Angeles studio where she will turn the altered filmstrip into a high definition digital format video which will be shown on the High Line on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at 6:30 PM on the High Line under The Standard, New York.
