Trajets pendant un an d’une jeune fille du XVIe arrondissement

Trajects pendant un an d’une jeune fille du XVIe arrondissement maps one year of movements of a young woman studying political science, revealing a narrow triangular routine connecting her home, university, and piano teacher’s residence.

Paul-Henry Chombart de Lauwe
Walking piece

I Went

In the I Went series (1968–79), On Kawara traced his daily movements on photocopied maps using red pen, marking his starting point with a dot. Maps were preserved in binders, with arrows and notes indicating his routes, creating a consistent, diaristic record of travel.

Procession

Jeremy Deller’s Procession (2009) was a moving parade celebrating Manchester’s people and public spaces, blending everyday life, humor, and surreal elements. Buskers, vendors, and a lorry-mounted café created a playful, participatory, social-surrealist artwork.

The Memorial Walks

The Memorial Walks is a record of a unique project, in which artist Simon Pope invited a series of writers to memorise a scene from a landscape painting, which they would then be asked to recall while out walking in the open country.

Vanessa Berry’s map of Parramatta Road elevates everyday sites like car dealerships and teddy bear stores, reflecting the city’s details through her repeated, attentive exploration.

In the text for the catalogue of the exhibition Navigation 4: Footsteps in the Corridor, the curator Nadia Odlum wrote:

“In the map of Parramatta Road: Landmarks and Monuments created by Vanessa Berry, quintessential features such as car dealerships and teddy bear stores are elevated to the status of hallowed landmarks. The author of the book Mirror Sydney and the blog of the same name, Berry explores and reflects on the city with the eyes of someone who has traversed it many times, observing with intent the fine details of its fabric and features.”
