Part group participation and part my own collaboration with the River Lugg and Upper Lugg Meadow, POROUS draws on ritual, the mythic / folkloric, the remembered, the ancestral, the yet to come. The work was developed through a series of improvised, imagined and informed ‘dialogues’, extending away from the actual into the imaginary.

‘a conversation with a river’ : … at 7pm on the 30th May 2026, 16 of us gathered, listened and improvised as we walked, sang, storied, drew and wrote with the river and meadow.

‘It seemed like a gradual melting into a different consciousness at times, especially the droning and expanding our peripheral senses’.

‘It felt so nourishing to be involved … all the experiences heightened a sense of being in a place and part of that place and this gradually evolved over the evening.’

‘It was very special to connect with the land, water and air in collective exploration and tender reverence’.

A multi-media installation of the work (Hereford, 12 – 18th July) created from the group and my own walking-listening-sounding-creating encounters included:

• two bio-acoustic sound-collages and a film, played simultaneously, overlapping
• canvases and paintings created with mud, worked with the River

My work considers the way we merge and emerge through relationship, exploring embodied participatory art-making as a re-membering that we are kin / of the same stuff as the multiplicity of earth around us. Engaging with place – through walking, deep listening, collective intuitive and improvised sound-making, the sharing of song, bio-acoustic music making, and co-created mark-making – my practice considers art as an intra-action, extending into the imaginary, inhabiting story, improvising with the world around.
