Sound walk

The Rim of Africa is a long-distance walking project that takes place in the Cape Fold Mountains, a region of critical biodiversity outside of Cape Town, South Africa. In 2012, as part of a National Geographic Young Explorer’s Grant, Jay Simpson completed the first-ever trek of the entire mountain passage, spending 50 days in the wilderness, bundu-bashing and hiking existing footpath to scout potential routes for future travelers. While hiking, Jay carried an audio recorder and compiled this sound collage of his experiences. The recording contains sounds of running mountain streams, hiking up scree-covered mountainsides, drinking water from streams, pollenators in flours, baboons and more.

A mode of itinerancy which employs one of more tactics to interrupt any efficient journey from a to b; these tactics are often used as tools for playful debate, collaboration, intervention and/or spatial meaning-making.
