Urban nature is receding, its traces fading. In this quiet vanishing, the natural self within us — our primal essence —retreats in tandem. Industry and planning systematically annex every scene.
In response, we crafted a series of wearable “animal-track” shoe covers. When a heavy snow fell, we — with eleven other participants — walked through the city, marking the white streets with the footprints of animals such as elephants, ducks, birds, reindeer, and foxes. In this animal manner, we declared a temporary territory, and reclaimed the city by leaving as many footprints as possible.
Walking is the core of this ritual.
The tracks are ephemeral, destined to vanish with the sun. Yet within each step lies an “escape from identity” — a perceptual reconstruction. We re-link our bodies to the Earth, somatically reawakening a connection to the wild, leaving behind for other humans a trail of puzzles and reveries along every path.
