My audio guides use sound and stories to interrogate cultural memory in historic places. Most audio guides that you are given if you visit an abbey or manor tend to be to be uninspiring and reductive, so I improvised my own text to imagine how stories could resonate in a different way, foreground different types of people or animals or trees, and create a more playful, questioning guide.
This guide plays on all the ways that memory is subjective, unreliable, creative, deep, and rich. What might be remembered, but hasn’t been? What can be learned at the line between real and imagined memory, shaking up fixed cultural understandings of the past?
I question official narratives about what places mean, and try to create a sense of belonging and vitality, through being irreverent and strange. This is a prompt for all visitors to reconsider, and to create more thoughtful and personal relationships with historic or non historic sites.
