Tidelines is a 1.5-mile (c.30-minute) soundwalk mapped to East Beach on the Isle of Berneray in the Western Isles of Scotland. Created in 2024 as part of a six-month residency with Taigh Chearsabhagh Museum & Arts Centre, the work combines community-written poetry, original compositions, and creative interpretations of archive and environmental soundscape recordings.
Developed in collaboration with local residents, school pupils, and community groups, Tidelines incorporates poems inspired by the coastal landscape and field recordings captured across Uist. This community material directly shaped the composition, informing its musical themes, soundscape content, and the route and structure of the soundwalk.
Structured into nine movements mapped along East Beach, Tidelines unfolds as listeners move, revealing poetry, music, and soundscapes. The work stands as a cultural expression, offering an immersive listening experience that reflects the islands’ coastal landscape and the voices of the people who live there.
