‘Tomb Street’ is an almost derelict 1960’s brutalist multi-storey car park in Belfast hidden away on, you guessed it Tomb Street, Although technically only open to cars its beautiful recessed pattern ceilings and untouched signage from the 60’s has attracted urban explorers, photographers and now sound artists to wander around its vast catacombs.
Tomb Street is a walking field recording beginning on the ground floor of the Car park with the recordist working their way upward toward the second floor in which I was playing a drone piece on a 100 year old Harmonium in a particularly resonant part of the car park.
The sounds of the city meld their way in and out of the composition as the faint drone heard at the start becomes clearer and more pronounced. I was interested in having a piece of music move from the listeners perspective through both time and physical space. I really enjoyed the sense of distance conveyed in the piece, hearing the drone in the background of the city sounds increasingly coming clearer.
