Sound walk

“Untitled | Red Braids” is the audio component of a 2-part audiovisual installation by multidisciplinary artist, Renée LoBue. The audio is accompanied by one of LoBue’s fantasy self-portraits. This unorthodox walking piece explores the tension between digital identity and reality in the age of social media. The vibrant red braids in the self-portrait symbolize the narratives we construct online, while the audio component juxtaposes LoBue’s field recordings of birds in nature with an exploratory conversation on the illusions we craft with technology. This non-traditional format gently and movingly asks the listener to pause and reflect on the illusions they may create and consume in the digital age. “Untitled | Red Braids” challenges us to question the curated realities we present and consider the impact these have on our true selves and our connections with others.

flakkari

“Icelandic culture is infused with stories of travel. When names were needed for modern machines, the technology that enables our imaginations to travel, words were chosen that centred on the quality of roaming. Thus the neologism for laptop is fartölva, formed from the verb far, meaning to migrate, and tölva – migrating computer’; its companion, the external hard drive, is a flakkari. The latter word can also mean ‘wanderer’ or ‘vagrant’. In the end it’s the wanderers we rely on.” From Nancy Campbell’s “The Library of Ice”.
