Politics of Walking: Grief, Solidarity, and Resistance

The recent protests in Serbia and Greece in part started as the expression of collected grief over, oddly for both, railway disasters. The resulting marches not only represented deep discontent with the actions of the respective governments, they were also expressions of solidarity and resistance.

In autumn 1969, Vito Acconci embarked on an unusual artistic pursuit in New York City. He chose people at random on the streets and followed them, continuing until they entered a building.

The truest form to present my research during the advanced master in artistic research was to take both my colleagues and my tutors for a walk in Beirut. To navigate together the streets, the cars, the people, the fauna and flora of this city. As well as navigating the (internet) disconnection/ connection inherent to my walking experience.

The walk starts from my parents’ house in Mousaytbeh to Beirut Printmaking Studio in Gemmayze. While the starting and the end points were planned, the actual route was not. I let my body navigate the alleys and the back streets as felt during that day.

I walked with two leporellos I had created earlier: the first included photos/ excerpts from my own writings on past walks, while the other included photos/excerpts of seven artists with whom I had previously walked through the city.

The walk was in Beirut, Lebanon. June 2021.
