Welcome to Greenwich Sounds Hi Lo sound walk devised as part of the 2020 Greenwich Sound Image Festival and written, recorded and produced by Andrew Stuck of the Museum of Walking
The route links the highest and lowest points in the Royal Borough of Greenwich and for the most part follows the Green Chain strategic path which is well signposted. Eaglefield Recreation Ground is the borough summit, at approximately 430 feet above sea level, with the junction between Luffield Road and Felixstowe Road in Abbey Wood the lowest point, at or about sea level. The sound walk is hosted on the Echoes.xyz app with conversations and sounds geo-located at certain points along the route.
Be aware of your surroundings, it is easy to become immersed in a sound walk, and fail to be attentive to what is actually happening around you.
The sound walk was produced during the second phase of lockdown. This meant that there were fewer people on the route, happy to be interviewed, and those that were had to be kept at a social distance. Our plan, is to continue walking the route during the Festival and beyond, adding conversations to the sound walk.
We would like to thank Borough Cllr Angela Cornforth (representing Plumstead) and Cllr Ann-Marie Cousins (representing Abbey Wood) for telephoning answers to our interview questions. We would like to also thank those interviewed on the route: Brian Youngs of the Cook’s Farm Allotments, and three residents and a couple walking the Green Chain, all who chose to remain anonymous. Getting to the Hi Lo sound walk route
The summit at Eaglefield Recreation Ground is on the Green Chain walking route (Sections 2 & 3). The nearest public transport are the 486 or 89 buses. Not far across the Shooters Hill Road is Oxleas Wood cafe and car park, run by the borough council.
The lowest point is a few minutes walk from Abbey Wood rail station.
