Awards coming up, and more

16 Jul, 2023

It's the middle of July, which also means that the deadlines for our awards, the SWS23 and Marŝarto23 Awards are fast approaching. In case you missed it, this year, for the first time, we will recognise the best walking art, with a separate prize, the Marŝarto Awards. All walking art, except soundwalks, are eligible. Soundwalks are still recognised through our SWS Awards.

The deadline for the SWS23 Awards is the last day of September. The deadline for the Marŝarto23 Awards is the last day of October.

Remember, also for the first time, we offer a cash prize for the winners, of at least 250 euros. And, if we reach certain thresholds for the number of our contributing supporters, first prizes can go up to an amazing 1000 euros.

Have you submitted your new work yet? Have you told your friends and colleagues that they can submit their work?

Read up on the SWS Awards, the Marŝarto Awards, and our membership program.
We'd really appreciate it if you can become a contributing supporter. By doing so, you support us at WLC, and you give back to the community, not in the least by contributing to the prize money for the awards recognising the best walking art that's out there.
And, as a perk, you will be able to attend all our cafés for free.

Meanwhile, it might be summer in some parts of the world, there's plenty on the agenda.

Just this week, we published a piece by Susannah Walker, who wrote a book on walking the old roads of England. And, this coming Tuesday, very connected to Susannah's book, we have our next café, Walking the Old Way between chalk and sea with Gail Simmons.

Then, on September 29, we are joining Street Wisdom in their World Wide Wander, in which, through six sessions on six continents, participants will explore their physical environment, with the objective of finding answers to questions they ask themselves. I'll be hosting the event in São Paulo, complementing events in Berlin, New York, Bangalore, Nairobi, and Melbourne, but you can join any of the sessions, wherever you are.
Check out the website, and more on this, soon.

To wrap up, you might be aware of the social media platform Reddit. In tech circles, it's been in the news recently, but not for the right reasons; to borrow a term from Cory Doctorow, the managers of the platform are enshittifying it to serve their own, and their future shareholders', purposes.
At the same time, this huge collection of online forums, on every topic you can imagine, is still one of the most visited websites in the world.
I'm now the moderator of the forum on Situationism, which has been around for years, and started a new forum, specifically on walking art. Come on over, join both, and have a chat.

Keep walking.

Described as England’s Camino, the Old Way is a long-distance footpath that carves through one of the nation’s most iconic landscapes – one that links prehistoric earthworks, abandoned monasteries, Saxon churches, ruined castles and historic seaports. Over four seasons, travel writer Gail Simmons walks the Old Way to rediscover what a long journey on foot offers us today.

Susannah Walker followed two of the oldest roads in England, and wrote a book about it. Not just about the walk itself, but also about being women walking.
