Anabella Lenzu/DanceDrama is made possible ONLY with your help!

Dear Friend,
I am writing to extend my immense gratitude for your support of Anabella Lenzu/DanceDrama over these last 18 years!
If 2024 was a drink it would be a triple espresso —Intense!
We premiered both the full length show and a 20 min film version of “Listen to You Mother,” received 4 film awards, finished a second book “Teaching and Learning Dance Through Meaningful Gestures,” that will be published in Jan 2025.
….and I was recently voted to be president of the American Dance Guild, a storied institution dedicated to supporting artists and bringing the dance community together since 1956!
With my husband Todd Carroll, we have been collaborating non-stop from one project to the next, and are very proud of the results! Our daughter Fiamma Lenzu-Carroll has been integral part of “Listen To You Mother,” and we performed together in 8 festivals in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens, NY.

Our films won 4 awards in 2024:
“Becoming”: Nominee for Best Music/ Dance video at Love & Hope International Film Festival, Barcelona and Semi-Finalist at Braga International Video Dance Festival, Portugal.
“Close to the Bone”: Semi-Finalist at Paris Lady MovieMakers Festival, Paris and Semi-Finalist at The Stockholm City Film Festival, Stockholm, Sweden.

We screened our nine dance films in 30 festivals both nationally and internationally.
We received grants from the Brooklyn Arts Council Grant, the NYSCA Grant (Film, Media & New Technology), The Harkness Foundation for Dance, and the Vermont Community Foundation Grant, supporting the creation of “Listen To Your Mother”.

HERE IS A DEEPER LOOK AT WHAT HAPPENED IN 2024

As a Choreographer/Dancer…
I premiered “Listen To Your Mother” at La Mama Moves festival in NYC.
As part of my choreographic research project, “Listen to Your Mother,” I have interviewed 30 mothers from 30-80 years old, who are also dancers/ choreographers. The common thread is that all are mothers and choreographers. Additionally, several are also immigrants, which of course is especially meaningful to me. We also created a 20-minute dance film version of “Listen To Your Mother” that was premiered at Center for Performance Research on November.

As a Teacher…
I continued offering the Online Choreographic Mentorship Program, which I
redesigned to provide 1 month of continued education via Online Dance Composition Workshops, with 15 International artists participating!
I’ve taught regular classes at NYU Gallatin, at Wagner College, as well as courses at School of Visual Arts.
At Peridance Center, I taught for the Certificate Program and Open Classes,
and also organized and curated the 2024 American Dance Guild Modern Dance Summer Intensive in June.

As a Writer…
I was invited to be Dance Enthusiast’s 2024 Moving Visions Editor, creating a
collection of interviews researching Dance Theater as a world wide phenomenon.
I finished writing my second book “Teaching and Learning Dance Through
Meaningful Gestures,” that will be published in January, 2025. It took me 11 years
to complete this journey! anabellalenzu.com/meaningful-gestures

As a Visual Artist, I…
Presented my solo photographic exhibition “My Body, My Country” at The Downstairs Theater at La Mama, NYC, at Spoke The Hub, Brooklyn, and at ESTIA Festival at Brooklyn Arts Haus.

As Board Member/Panelist/Curator…
I was appointed president of the American Dance Guild, dedicated to supporting
artists and bringing the dance community together since 1956.
I worked as part of the Selection Committee Member for The Bessies Awards, New York (my 4th year in this position, stepping down this past May).
I was selected to be a speaker and showed my dance films at the International
Parenting and Dance Network Symposium at Texas Tech University, and at The
kNOwBOX Dance Festival, Dallas, TX. I was also invited to be part of the selection Panel at The Evolution Festival, The Center at West Park Presbyterian Church, NYC, and I was the Guest Dance Curator for The Brick Theater– Brooklyn.

Without the support of you artists, family, friends, and audience… we would not exist.

Over these 18 years, your sustained support has helped me create outstanding performances & high caliber educational programs, exploring my artistic voice as a Latina artist living in New York. It comes from a deep
examination of my motivations as a woman, mother, and immigrant.
Sincerely yours, Anabella Lenzu
