François DAVIN

François DAVIN

(Australia / France)
In the last 25 years, Francois walked several parts of Compostella and Shikoku Island Henro pilgrimages, as an artist-pilgrim, along which trails he offered his visual “acts of art” as sorts of prayers. He shared his quest with the sedentary populations, often receiving their hosting support in return, as happened in the past.
French and Australian, Francois Davin is a visual site-specific artist.
He was knighted in France in 2000 for his contribution to the arts.
He is a founding member and honorary president of Artists in Nature International Network, and the international delegate for the French Sculptors Union.
For the last 35 years, François has been involved, as an artist and as an activist, in the international evolution of site-specific art. He approaches a site meditating about its landscape, memory, geology, fauna and flora, what is done there and who cares for it, the inhabitants.

lonning, lonnin

Cumbrian dialect term for ‘lane’ – but a quite specific lane. Lonnings are usually about half a mile long, low level and often with a farm at the end. Many have specific names known only to the local villagers. Hence, Bluebottle Lonning, Lovers Lonning, Fat Lonning, Thin Lonning, Squeezy Gut Lonning or Dynamite Lonning. In the north-east the spelling is lonnin and seems to refer more to an alley than a country lane. The Scottish equivalent is ‘loan’.
