Pauline Oliveros

Viv Corringham is a singer and walking sound artist who will host this walk · listen · café. Pauline Oliveros, Viv’s teacher, was a US composer and creator of Deep Listening.

  • Can sound help us to understand our environment?
  • Can listening help us to be present in each moment of the walk?
  • Can listening reveal the essence of a place?
  • Can we listen to the song of the walk?

Viv:

“I would like to tell you about my practice as a walking sound artist.
I lead group sound-walks- sometimes in silence, sometimes responding to the soundscape with our own sounds.
I’m a sonic flaneur who drifts through cities and sings with them.
Via Songlines and Song Paths of Indigenous peoples, I arrived at my long term, almost 20 year, project Shadow-walks, in which I walk with inhabitants of places on their special walks. Then I repeat the route alone, listening for the memory and traces of that walk and singing my response.”

Join Viv and moderator Geert Vermeire for a coffee, listen to Viv’s insights and discuss how we can listen with our feet.

Libraries as Gardens – sound walk in Athens

The National Garden of Athens is transformed into an audio book of stories by people all over the world, during the pandemic, telling about their favorite public gardens and reading from their favorite books at home during lockdown. You can listen to the recordings while walking inside the National Garden of Athens through a webapp

zig-zag walking

A kind of attitudinal or intentional walk in which one chooses a zig-zag pathway, choosing a feature in the environment to walk towards and changing chosen feature and direction at will. A way to subvert prescribed directionality, and view, of built urban pathways.
