Dear colleagues
We invite you to join us for the third walk of the year on Friday 5th
Once again our walking will be solitary but synchronised, so that we can walk together wherever we happen to be, in the virtual company of other walkers.
Our First Friday Walks usually start with a pub lunch – but despite the easing of lockdown restrictions, (in the UK at least) that remains in our dreams.
Instead we’ll be setting up a short Zoom session starting at 12:00 GMT, just long enough so you can enjoy some company and say hello to fellow walkers, eat a sandwich and have a brief discussion about the walk.
We leave to start the walk at 13:15 GMT – some may well be in different time zones…if that’s the case please just email and let us know
Our walk will again have as a focus ideas around ‘Place’ – this time, how we know, recognise and respond to it. It’s highly likely our concept of ‘place’ can be seen to be both fluid and deeply rooted
Below are quotes that go some way individuals try to explain that awareness:
“We lack – we need – a term for those places where one experiences a ‘transition’ from a known landscape … into ‘another world’: somewhere we feel and think significantly differently. They exist even in familiar landscapes: there when you cross a certain watershed, recline or snowline, or enter rain, storm or mist. Such moments are rites of passage that reconfigure local geographics, leaving known places outlandish or quickened, revealing continents within counties.”
Robert Macfarlane
“Place is always the first thing I connect with – rather than the music or the imagery – when I travel; I am always trying to understand what a place is, and what does it mean to the people that live here? What are its layers of history? How has it changed? How might it change?”
Julian Hoffman
We invite you to search your own thoughts on what goes to make a place special for you.
Try to explain exactly what it may be about the place that influenced your response. This could be through any visual media, through sound or words…wherever it takes you.
So that your work can be shared with others on this walk, we’ll set up a private and confidential March FFW Facebook page (only available to us) where you’ll be able to upload your work or links to you media, as well as make and answer comments
Please get back to us by return if you’d like to join with us by emailing [email protected]. We won’t be able to acknowledge your reply individually but we plan to send you more details together with the Zoom meeting ID by next Wednesday. If for any reason you haven’t received the details by then, please give us a nudge
To ease our means of communication, we assume that by contacting us you’re happy to receive email messages with your names seen by other participants. If you prefer to remain anonymous, just let us know and your name will be hidden
With best wishes for an enjoyable March walk
Richard, Andy, Tom and Kel
