Windwalkers
We are four students from the UK and Russia completing Masters degrees in Advanced Theatre Practice and Scenography at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, London. We have varied backgrounds in Design, History, Literature, Architecture and Theatre.
We formed as a group to research the possibilities and problematics of a reparative walking practice in the context of the global pandemic. After initial practical experimentation and research into other walking artists, we identified a group interest in subverting dominant spatial narratives by ceding control and being led for a walk.
We began exploring how kites could harness weather conditions and activate unconscious bodily movement in the flyer, guided by the wind. We organised a communal kite building and flying event in April 2021, investigating how a playful embodied walking practice can combat notions of isolation and disconnection to body, people, and place.
