Asked to write concisely about walking away or walking a way, we had more than 60 poems and flash stories submitted to our 2023 Write about Walking writing competition from which our four volunteer judges, Tony Horitz and Ralph Hoyte (for poetry) and Cheryl Markosky and S A Greene (for prose) have selected a long list of 21 pieces.
The theme of Walking A/way was chosen by our current writers in residence, Tony and Cheryl, who will be relinquishing their residencies at the end of Sound Walk September. A poet and prose writer from these longlisted pieces will take on the mantle at our Write About Walking showcase event on Sound Walk Story Sunday (24 September), at which a shortlist of these writers will read their work – from reading the longlist, can you establish who are our winners?
Intriguingly, four writers have had two pieces each, included in the longlist!
You can read all 21 of them from today on the walk · listen · create website. Congratulations to all long listers:
Ricky Abbott, John Bowen, Shanie Cadwallender, Kevin Cheeseman, Julie Coldwell, Lorraine Collins, Chris Cuninghame, Eilín de Paor, Amelia Hodsdon, Peter Isaacson, Rosaleen Lynch, Jan Martin, Isabella Mead, Sharon Pinner, Sarah Oakes, Erica Sharlette, and Richard Westcott.
