This second series of Unseen Soundwalks takes a look at the Warsaw Uprising of 1944 and the Polish fight for independence from Nazi German occupation.
Working with the award-winning Warsaw Rising Museum to recreate the most important events of the Uprising, Unseen Soundwalks: Warsaw Rising ’44 recounts tales of honour and defiance, but also of death and total destruction.
This new series highlights the fighting surrounding some of Warsaw’s most iconic buildings, such as the PAST telephone exchange and Prudential buildings, while other stops on the soundwalk include tales of derring-do, such as the assassination of Franz Kutschera – dubbed “The Butcher of Warsaw” – as well the one of the largest bank heists in all of Nazi-occupied Europe.
The series also confronts listeners with some of the horrors of the Nazi German occupation, such as the Wola Massacre, which saw some 50,000 Poles murdered within a week following Hitler’s orders to raze Warsaw to the ground once he got wind of the Uprising.
Unseen Soundwalks: Warsaw Rising ’44 follows on from the first series of Unseen, which highlights the destruction of Warsaw’s urban fabric following World War II in the vicinity of the Palace of Culture and Science.
