Colne Rising

Marsden, Huddersfield, UK
60 minutes
free
Sound walk

Imagine a world where the A1 in Northern England is now the east coast of England, and coastal storms send unprecedented amounts of water inland. The equinox brings high tides, and the full moon is adding power to the swell. Even Marsden could soon be under water and people are heading for the hills.

The year is 2067, and even 75 miles inland is not safe from the sea. A series of short spoken-word performances will submerge you in this new world with its own history, populated by seemingly familiar people, places and stories. But as with all future scenarios nothing is certain…

Lyrical, engaging and ultimately reinforcing the importance of ecologies, this walk will transform every landlubber to hypothetical seafarer.

Writer and performer Sarah Hymas is ready to take you on a journey to experience this hopefully-fantastical tale. You might need a waterproof and stout boots are recommended!

scow-ways, scowish

On a slant, as in “Walk scow-ways across the street as slow as you can and dare them to hit you.” from the Dictionary of Newfoundland English (University of Toronto Press, 1982).
