Place-making and the rivers of Lewisham

As we follow the river from Lower Sydenham to Catford Bridge, in Lewisham, South East London, we invite you to think about how these places were made and how people continue to feed into shaping the river and the spaces through which it flows. We’ll be hearing from those who look after it, those who move through it and play in it. To walk with us on the route of the walk, start at the entrance to the Waterlink Way on Southend Lane. We will walk from here to Catford Bridge. From: maps.app.goo.gl/uESVrh6h2YoMsUCQ8 to: maps.app.goo.gl/bQHWhJQgdV9G8iDq8 Otherwise, listen wherever you are!

stroam

Do you like to stroll? Are you a fan of roaming? Then you should give stroaming a try. This is a word blend, just like brunch. In her 1796 novel Camilla, Frances Burney described a character who “stroamed into the ball-room, with the most visible marks of his unfitness for appearing in it.” The OED indicates that stroaming involves “long strides” and/or idleness, so watch your form and attitude when out on a stroam. Credits to Mark Peters.
