Steps, next steps, awards
The application window for the SWS Awards 2023 just closed, and already the first submission for SWS24 is in. Our online jury now has until the end of October to come up with a shortlist, which might not be overly easy, as, pleasantly, I’ve noticed that, across the board, the quality of submissions is high.
You know we work together with a range of partners, including several platforms which you can use to construct your own sound walks. From early on, we partnered with Soundtrails and Echoes, and the number of SWS23 submissions that were created with Echoes is impressive.
This year, we also welcome four submissions for SWS23 that were made with Storydive. “Get off the couch and into the story!”
Storydive is based in Germany. This Wednesday, October 4, they’re hosting an online Barcamp, Next Steps, around the creation of sound walks. Participation is free, but you have to sign up by tomorrow..
If you decide to participate, you can join a session I’ll be hosting, on which I’ll share thoughts, ideas, and, hopefully, some insights on facilitating audience engagement in connection with creating and marketing sound walks.
Thankfully, they start in the early afternoon (CEST), meaning I can still get up at a normal time (here in Brazil).
Meanwhile, the submission deadline for the Marŝarto Awards 2023 is approaching. You have until the end of this month to submit your walking art (that is not a sound walk). Remember, as this is the first time we’re hosting this award, work that was created in 2022 and 2023 is eligible.
In other news, I just learned that March 21 was declared World Poetry Day by UNESCO in 1999, five years after the UK declared National Poetry Day on the first Thursday of October, which is this week, on October 5, on the theme 'refuge'.
A good thing, as Brits certainly need a bit more poetry in their lives, the UK now one of the poorest countries in Western Europe.
You recall that we just finished a writing competition, where Shani Cadwallender won with her poem stump speech, “…inspired by my research for my creative-critical PhD project […], which is about the representative strategies used by marginal women poets of the nineteenth century to depict trees.”, which made her our poet in residence for the coming year.
And, did you participate in the World Wide Wander last Friday? I certainly had fun, hosting one walk, based in São Paulo, while hundreds (thousands?) participated all over the world. If you missed it, or need some inspiration from the streets, join one of Street Wisdom’s upcoming walkshops.
