Walking to stimulate writing – an Arvon Tutored Retreat

The Hurst- Arvon

Join tutors Jean Atkin and Tom Chivers for an inspirational week of walking and writing in the abundant Shropshire woodlands, hills and valleys that surround The Hurst. Let the rhythms of walking clear your mind and align your body with your imagination, stimulating new ideas and fresh writing.

Each day will offer a different walking workshop, encouraging you to use the beautiful surroundings to inspire your writing. In the afternoons you’ll have one tutorial from each tutor in poetry and/or non-fiction across the week, and the evenings will bring intimate gatherings to hear the tutors and the guest read from their work.

This course is suitable for any enthusiastic walkers who feel able to walk up to 5 miles, including up and down steep hills. Bring outdoor all weather clothing and a pair of good walking boots.

snaffle, snoodle

These fanciful-sounding words have no definitive origin: They probably just sounded right to someone who was sauntering, which is what they both mean. An Oxford English Dictionary (OED) example from 1821 describes someone “soodling up and down the street.” Credits to Mark Peters.
