I designed a participatory walk with audio instructions to investigate whether by changing the way we walk on a particular city street, our experience and the way we perceive that particular space changes. In this condition, the
everyday movement that takes place in the city environment can be seen (beyond its functional use) as a dance event and the city as a choreographic space.

The walking experience gave rise to new thoughts, feelings and realizations for the participants. They observed themselves and their surroundings , found personal connections with the space and the fellow walkers, questioned how they walk daily in the city, whether they follow their needs and desires or are influenced by social conventions.

The walk served as an introspection that revealed poetic aspects of everyday life and set up a new, embodied channel for observation, reflection and critical thinking.

In this piece, “Pezo” (in Greek meaning “pedestrian” or “in prose”), the act of walking appears in a participatory form, pre-designed walk in urban space. During the walk the participants follow auditory instructions that invite them to activate their senses. They move their bodies in different ways than usual and are invited into a conscious walking experience. The project intends to contribute to the awareness of how we move, think, observe and co-construct, individually and collectively, the spaces in which we inhabit. The pre-planned walk draws attention to the coexistence of material and physical bodies in the city and how through physical communication the bodies respond to each other consciously or unconsciously.

hybrid flaneur/flaneuse

Hybrid flaneur/flaneuse has become a performative “orchestrator” of steps and technologies – of sensory and emotional encounters. It is this oscillation between the poetic, the socio-technological, the geographical and the emotional that shifts the meaning of flanerie and walking in the 21st century. Hybrid flaneur/flaneuse can be also described in line with the cultural and aesthetic trajectories of the 20th century ambulatory practices. Therefore, a hybrid flaneur/flaneuse could be a creative merging of the romanticised view of early flaneur, the radical tactics and political implications of psychogeography and the performative/site-oriented elements of Fluxus and Land Art – all considered through a wide range of embodied media, social and geographical sensitivities.
