9 Oct, 2023

We're in October, which means the deadline for the SWS Awards 2023 has come and gone. Now that the dust has settled, we see we've received 60 submissions. Our Online Jury is making sense of them now.

This being October, it also means the deadline for the Marŝarto Awards is quickly approaching. For our new award, which recognises and celebrates walking art (minus sound walks), walking pieces created in 2022 and 2023 are eligible. So, if you put something together recently, or know someone who has, make sure the work is submitted and up for the award.
Remember, prizes are in cold hard cash.

This weekend, it's been impossible to not be confronted with the violent escalation of the conflict in Israel and Palestine. Make no mistake, the surprisingly harsh attack by Hamas will be countered by a much harsher Israeli response, reinforcing who is really the aggressor in this conflict. Worse, Netanyahu might seize Hamas' attack as a justification for starting a war with Iran. Thankfully, so far, the Iran-angle is not pushed too much, but the Wall Street Journal is already putting Iran in the picture.

Not many pieces of walking art have a focus on the Middle East, but there are interesting exceptions. One work which Roelant Meijer submitted just this weekend for Marŝarto23, is set in Oman, and it channels the well known piece by Francis Alÿs, in which he carried leaking cans of green paint through Jerusalem. He traced the line following the portion of the ‘Green Line’ that runs through the municipality of the eternal city, this line being the one that Lt. Colonel Moshe Dayan marked on a map in 1948, after the end of the United Nations Mandate of Palestine and the declaration of the State of Israel, and which served as the border between the two countries until the Six Day War, which led to the occupation of the Palestinian-inhabited region east of the Green Line by Israel.

What might be a must-read either way, whether you're into 'walking' as a conceptual, artistic, or even revolutionary act, or not, is Raja Shehadeh's Palestinian Walks.

Meanwhile, just a week ago, The Guardian highlighted a number of artists, working 'under siege' in Gaza, the world's largest open air prison. "...art is the way I feel free in this place."

How many of them will still be alive at the end of this week?

In solidarity.

New walking pieces

When you are lost, it seems a good idea to walk a straight line. This piece reflects my experiment: for seven consecutive days I walked the same circle in the desert. Don’t we all walk in circles in our own lives, thinking we are going straight? Keep reading
