Mapping a digital quipu

Elspeth (Billie) Penfold is a textile artist who brings her experience of teaching and research into performative work. In 2012 she formed the arts group Thread and Word. Through call outs and personal invitation Elspeth works collaboratively with invited artists and academics to develop performative walks. Elspeth was born in Bolivia, and she likens the digital threading of texts with the physical threading of Andean quipus.

The 20-minute walk includes changing musical cues and voices that shift as participants move through different streets, forming part of the 2020 res[on]ance [off] exhibition.

Geolocated poetry was a pilot project launched on 1 May 2011, featuring a geolocated poetry sound walk with live art performances in Citadel Park near the City Museum of Contemporary Art (S.M.A.K.). The project, coordinated by Geert Vermeire and involving Escoitar.org / noTours and the Milena principle/WIT Urban Team, was later updated and presented at the E-Culture Fair in Hasselt in November 2011.

Geolocated poetry was a pilot project combining the collaborative creation of a geolocated poetry sound walk for smartphones with live art performances in the Citadel Park around the City Museum of Contemporary Art (S.M.A.K.). Inauguration of the walk : 1 May 2011.

A collaboration between Escoitar.org / noTours – the Milena principle/WIT Urban Team, coordinated and curated by Geert Vermeire.

About noTours

An updated version of the poetry walk with live performances was presented later that year (16-16 November 2011) at E-Culture Fair / World Creativity Forum at the Ethias Arena in Hasselt (B).
