Open call for sound walk art residency in Catalonia

Contemporary Art Center Nau Côclea is opening a call for an art residency in Camallera (Catalonia), in the context of Sound Walk September 2022, in collaboration with walk · listen · create.

We invite artists, writers and researchers to apply for a residency of 2 weeks, from September 26 to October 9, 2022.

Period and artistic disciplines

The art residency is organized from September 26 to October 9. Applications are open to all artists, writers and researchers, with a focus on sound walking. Applying is possible as an individual or as a collective. Emerging and young artists, writers and researchers who want to explore the potential of sound walking in their practice are encouraged to apply.

Topic

The topic of the residency is “sound walking”. What is a sound walk?

A sound walk, or walking piece, is any walk that focuses on listening to the environment, with or without the use of technology, or adds to the experience through the use of sound or voice. This can include a scripted or choreographed score or work that has additional audio elements.

Accommodation and resources

Accommodation is located in a natural environment in Camallera, Catalonia, a small village less than 2 hours by regular train from Barcelona.

The residency includes the accommodation of the artist or artist collective (up to 4 people) in an independent house, the use of a 80m2 workspace to share with the  center, and outdoor spaces.

The house, with a large garden and surrounded by fields and forests, is made entirely available to the artist or the collective. The house is small, but has two double bedrooms, a gas kitchen with a double hot plate, microwave and small fridge, a bathroom/shower and a living room with a wood stove. Central heating is also available. The use of the wood stove is free. The use of central heating has an extra cost per week. There is a wifi connection.

The use of the work/rehearsal room is also included. It is shared with the  center’s other activities. The room has 80m2 with a central column, wooden floor, concrete walls and LED spotlight lighting. The artists can use a video projector and sound equipment. Based on arrangements made before, accompaniment to artists can be planned  according to their needs: contacts with the community, other and local artists, services  and suppliers, etc.

Photographs of the accommodation are here.

Mentoring and presentation

The artists will be required to discuss their project during online sessions with walk · listen · create coordinators Andrew Stuck, Babak Fakhamzadeh and Geert Vermeire, before the residency and during the residency (at the beginning, the middle and the end).

The artists will present their work and/or the process of their residency during a café on October 4th 2022.

Fees

The residency incurs no fee for the artists. The artists are co-responsible for the maintenance of the residence. The artist must arrive at the residence by his own means. There is no honorarium, nor a production budget for the artists. Travel or living expenses and medical assistance insurance are not covered. Non-residents of Spain must have any appropriate visas, COVID ‘passport’, if still applicable, and their own health insurance during the stay.

Submission of applications

Applications can be submitted until July 15, 2022. The list of selected resident(s) will be announced on August 1st, 2022.

We are no longer taking submissions.

The application document must include the following:

  • Contact information of the responsible artist: name, email and telephone.
