Walk that Body
This week sees the start of The Walking Body (TWB) 6. Now celebrating its sixth edition, TWB is an international meeting of walking artists, this year dedicated to ‘communities of change’, communities that are plural, on the move, and sensitive to issues of the social and natural ecology of the environment in which we live.
TWB takes place from the 26th of March to the 12th of April, in Guimarães, close to Porto, in Portugal, and explores local communities as dynamic entities in constant transformation, connecting people, territories and ecologies through movement, the art of walking, and the relationship between the city and the landscape of Guimarães.
We, that is, WLC, are facilitating two online events during TWB 6. The first is on March 27, which is a Confluence. This means that during half of this event we’ll discuss the WALC project and its progress. The other half will be a walkthrough of the exhibition that opens TWB 6, in loving memory.
The second is a cafe on April 9, called The New Wave of Walking Artists?, with a particular focus on ecological transformation.
I’m rather privileged in that the opening photo exhibition, in loving memory, is mine, and has been 18 months in the making, including work made in 12 countries.
As I’m on a roll, I’m also hosting a workshop/lecture for students of UMinho, the University of Minho. TWB is hosted by Lap2PT, which is part of the School of Architecture at UMinho. The workshop will culminate in the production of a collaborative sound walk, or drive, set in Guimarães.
TWB 6 will also see work, workshops, and sessions, by Geert Vermeire, Jordi Lafon, Miguel Duarte, Montsita Rierola, Natacha Antão, Rosa Soares, and Stefaan van Biesen.
Meanwhile, as part of our collaboration with Beach of Dreams, a UK-wide coastal arts festival activating and exploring the unique heritage, cultures and climate futures of the British coastlines, quite a few events are happening this week, starting with, on Tuesday the 25th, Threads of Tomorrow, in which Ali Pretty invites you to discover the works of three textile artists who will be contributing to Beach of Dreams.
