So much in September

8 Sep, 2024

Sound Walk September has come around! The deadline for having your sound walk considered for the SWS Awards, the end of the month, is approaching. Submit your work today, and have your work join the nearly 60 pieces that have been submitted, so far.
Work produced in 2023 and 2024 is eligible. Don't leave submission to the last minute, and give our amazing Online Jury some breathing space.

Prize money for our awards depends on you, our supporting members. And, earlier this year, we reached the threshold for doubling the prize money to 500 euros for the winning piece. Our next step is to move to 1000 euros for the winner, but we need you to make that happen.

If you've stuck with us over the last few years, you'll have seen that we do not have as many events scheduled for this September as we might have had in the past. Yet, several events stand out.
On September 17, as part of WALC, the cross-Europe collaboration we are a part of, we're co-hosting an online seminar on Walking as a community based art practice. It's online and free to attend.
From September 25 to 29, our good friends at Cona are organising To)pot, a festival of radical soundwalks, in the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana. In-person and free.
Then, on September 27, it's the World Wide Wander, with free events online and in-person, around the world, where you can explore physical space and discover something new about yourself.

You might be short on time for this year's award, if you still need to start on implementing your next great idea for putting together an innovative sound walk. Either way, remember that we got a (somewhat dated) overview of tools at your disposal for creating sound walks.

One that has stuck around for a long time, and is also one of our supporters, is Echoes. Founded, and still run, by Josh Kopeček, Josh this week talked about the exciting new direction he wants to take Echoes in, supporting the platform through a community-based framework.

One collaborative work which I myself recently wrapped up goes back to 2020, and is a reimagining of 30 Days of Walking, a project which, at the start of the pandemic, brought together a few dozen creators. It constructed a continuous sound walk that covered the whole of September 2020.
At the time, the project had its own website, which has now been retired. Instead, the resulting work is now available through a YouTube playlist, but also as a single 14.5 hour video on Rumble.

Next, I'm getting ready for a whirlwind tour of Europe. Perhaps I'll see you in Greece, at my World Wide Wander, or at WALK21 in Portugal, where I'm hosting a workshop, or perhaps in Belgium, where WALC is meeting to prepare for 2025.

Keep walking!

Repeatedly going over the same terrain, generally backwards and forwards, although there is no reason why it can’t be circular. Whether done in- or outdoors it is usually restricted to a small area. Can be done at any time of the day or night. Eg when trying to get or keep a newborn to sleep.
